Captain Tony

Location: Boynton Beach

Description: Captain Tony is 167 feet long Dutch freighter and sits bow facing south. The bottom is 80 feet and the forward mast used to rise to about 45 feet. Unfortunately like all shipwrecks they get ravaged by deterioration and tropical storms. The mast now sticks out at an angle to port and the wheelhouse lays to the starboard as if something picked the wreck up and twisted it. There are several places where you can enter the wreck, but be aware you may encounter a hiding Goliath Grouper. Be sure to look up to see large numbers of schooling fish circling the ship.

History: Formally known as the M/V Becks the ship was scuttled on October 22, 1996. Soon after sinking it was renamed “Captain Tony” in memory of a local dive charter captain Tony Townsend. Captain Tony was killed in November of 1996 by a drunken boater that ran over his fishing boat.
